LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Lakers center Shaquille O'Neal had surgery on his arthritic right big toe on Wednesday to remove painful bone spurs that restricted motion in his foot.

Recovery time is expected to be six to eight weeks, Dr. Robert Mohr said. O'Neal might miss Los Angeles' season opener against San Antonio on Oct. 29.

O'Neal, who has led the Lakers to three consecutive NBA titles, played last season using a combination of medication, orthotics and other treatments to ease the pain, but no method was effective.

O'Neal missed 15 games last season during two stints on the injured list. He averaged 27.2 points and 10.7 rebounds -- below his career averages.
