NEW ORLEANS -- The New Orleans Hornets waived forward Lee Nailon and guard Terrell McIntyre on Wednesday, reducing their roster to 14. Nailon played two seasons with the Hornets, averaging 8.4 points and 3.2 rebounds in 121 games. He 9.1 points and 3.6 rebounds in seven games this preseason. The Hornets signed the 5-foot-9 McIntyre as a free agent last month. He averaged 1.5 points and 1.5 assists in four preseason games. Hawks' Mohammed out with foot injuryATLANTA (AP) -- Atlanta Hawks center Nazr Mohammed will miss at least a week because of a bruised bone in his right foot. Mohammed, who played all 82 games last season, underwent an MRI on Wednesday and there was some doubt whether he'd be ready for the start of the regular season. The team said it will re-evaluate his condition in a week. The Hawks open the season Oct. 30 at defending Eastern Conference champion New Jersey, then return home the following night for their Philips Arena opener against Utah. Mohammed started 73 games last season in place of the injured Theo Ratliff, averaging career highs in points (9.7) and rebounds (7.9). Mohammed is expected to return to a backup role this year.
Former Sun Shumate to coach WNBA's MercuryPHOENIX (AP) -- John Shumate, a first-round draft pick of the Phoenix Suns out of Notre Dame 28 years ago, has a background that should come in handy for his new job as coach of the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury. Shumate, 50, has been with the Suns organization since 1998, first in community relations and most recently as a college scout. He was assistant coach of the Toronto Raptors from 1995 to 1998 and head coach at Southern Methodist from 1988 to 1995. The color analyst for Mercury telecasts in 2000, Shumate becomes the first male to coach the Mercury. Cheryl Miller coached the team its first three seasons. Cynthia Cooper was the head coach at the start of last season, but resigned and was replaced by interim coach Linda Sharp. Shumate played seven seasons in the NBA before becoming an assistant coach to Digger Phelps at his alma mater. He was head coach at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix from 1984-86.
Suns exercise option clause for centerPHOENIX -- The Phoenix Suns exercised the team's option on center Jake Tsakalidis' contract Wednesday. The move puts the 7-foot-2 center under contract through at least the 2003-04 season. After that, the Suns have the right to match any offer Tsakalidis might receive as a restricted free agent. Tsakalidis averaged 7.3 points and 5.6 rebounds last season. After Scott Skiles resigned as coach and Frank Johnson took over, Tsakalidis' role increased and he averaged 9.3 points and 6.5 rebounds. Tsakalidis, born in Greece and raised in the former Soviet state of Georgia, was the Suns' first-round draft pick in 2000 and the 25th selection overall. Also Wednesday, the Suns released forward Chris Burgess and guard Anthony Goldwire. Knicks waive guard Jemeil RichNEW YORK -- Guard Jemeil Rich was waived Wednesday by the New York Knicks. The 5-foot-10 Rich didn't score in three preseason games, averaging 3.3 minutes. The move reduced the Knicks' roster to 16 players two days before they play New Jersey in their last exhibition game. Rich was signed as a free agent by the Knicks last month. He played in Italy last season.
