'Cease and desist' LeBron merchandise not permitted without star's blessingPosted: Friday February 28, 2003 11:43 PMAKRON, Ohio (AP) -- Anyone using LeBron James' name or likeness without his permission is committing a foul. Lawyers for the high school basketball star are sending "cease and desist" letters to those selling or producing unauthorized James merchandise. Ever since the expected No. 1 NBA draft pick became nationally known, hundreds of items -- from T-shirts to trading cards to jerseys -- have been traded or sold on the Internet. At one game, "LeBron James" bootleg shirts were being sold for $15 apiece by a vendor outside the arena. James has given permission to only one nonprofit group -- an advocate for housing and commercial development -- to use his name and likeness to raise money. "Those who are making unauthorized use of his name or image can rest assured, sooner or later, they're going to hear from us," lawyer Fred Nance said.
