Shaq, McGrady honored Posted: Tuesday April 01, 2003 6:53 PMNEW YORK (Ticker) -- Tracy McGrady's scoring touch throughout March led the Orlando Magic to a 10-5 record and gave him Eastern Conference Player of the Month honors on Tuesday. Los Angeles Lakers center Shaquille O'Neal won the award in the Western Conference. McGrady averaged 36.5 points, 6.3 assists and 5.7 rebounds in March. He led or tied the team in scoring in all 15 games, in rebounding four times and in assists on 12 occasions. McGrady scored 48 points while adding 10 rebounds, five assists and three steals in a 111-99 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on March 5. He also had 41 points, seven rebounds and six assists in a 97-95 win over the New Orleans Hornets on March 26. March closed with McGrady collecting 39 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists and three steals in a 118-113 overtime defeat to the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday. O'Neal averaged 31.6 points and 11.0 rebounds in leading the Lakers to an 11-5 record. The star center had 40 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks in a 106-96 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on March 7. Exactly two weeks later, he poured in 48 points while pulling down 20 rebounds in a 104-96 win over the Boston Celtics. Other candidates for Eastern Conference Player of the Month honors were Cleveland's rookie Carlos Boozer, Detroit's Ben Wallace, New York's Allan Houston and Philadelphia's Allen Iverson. Dallas' Dirk Nowitzki, Golden State's Antawn Jamison, Houston's Steve Francis, and Minnesota's Kevin Garnett also were considered in the Eastern Conference.
