BOSTON (AP) -- The Boston Celtics plan to retire Cedric Maxwell's No. 31 early next season, making him the 22nd player in team history to have a jersey retired.

Maxwell, an analyst on Celtics radio broadcasts, spent eight seasons with Boston after being drafted in the first round in 1977. The 6-foot-8 forward was on championship teams in 1981 and 1984 and averaged 13.7 points and 6.6 rebounds over his Celtics' career.

Maxwell finished his 11-year NBA career playing one season with the Los Angeles Clippers and two with the Houston Rockets.

"This is a well-deserved honor for Cedric Maxwell, who was a unique player in that he was content to play defense and rebound, but there was never a doubt that he could score," Celtics president Red Auerbach said Thursday.

A date for the retirement ceremony will be chosen after next season's NBA schedule is determined.

Maxwell, still Boston's career leader with a field-goal percentage of 55.9, was named MVP of the NBA finals in 1981 and scored 24 points in the seventh-game victory in 1984 over the Los Angeles Lakers.

The Celtics have retired 19 numbers between 1 and 35. Also retired are "00" worn by Robert Parish and "Loscy," in honor of Jim Loscutoff, whose No. 18 was kept active for Dave Cowens.
