Going-away gift for Bach

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Michael Jordan and Patrick Ewing gave a nifty retirement present to Washington assistant John Bach -- a new Rolls-Royce.

"I'm terribly happy and utterly surprised," said the 77-year-old coach, who is retiring from coaching after 50 years. "It proves to me that the NBA does a lot of wonderful things for its own people. This is something I'll never forget."

Ewing, also a Wizards assistant, and Jordan shocked Bach before Saturday night's game against the Atlanta Hawks when they suggested the entire team go down to the arena's garage.

"Patrick said he had just bought a new motorcycle," Bach said. "That was the ruse. There it was -- as only Michael and he can do. They can make things happen."

Coach Doug Collins said Ewing had planned to give the present by himself, but that Jordan found out and asked to chip in.

"It's a car I've always wanted to have, but I wanted a used one," Bach said. "I wanted one I could sit in and enjoy. Now I've got to make sure my garage can handle the car."

Bach was a longtime college coach before becoming the architect of the defense used by the Chicago Bulls when they won their first three NBA titles with Jordan in the early 1990s.
