Utah All-American Meads picks BYU Posted: Sunday May 14, 2000 03:37 PM
SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Garner Meads, a 6-foot-9 standout from Brighton High School in Salt Lake City, will play college basketball at BYU, rejecting offers from Utah and Stanford. Meads said he plans to sign a national letter of intent Monday. He said BYU coach Steve Cleveland, reached by telephone at the San Francisco airport, "let out a whoop" when Meads gave his decision. "He was very excited that I chose BYU," Meads said. "He said I'll be a really good fit." Meads had said previously he would serve a two-year Mormon church mission before college. Now, he plans to play next season, then take a mission and return two years later as a sophomore. Meads, a McDonald's All-American and a third-team Parade All-American, is regarded as one of the best players ever produced in Utah. He averaged 22 points and 12 rebounds a game for Brighton as a senior, helping the Bengals reach the Class 5A state championship game. He had surgery April 30 to remove a floating bone fragment in his left knee. "Now that it is gone, I should be able to jump better than ever," he said. Meads' commitment gives BYU one of the nation's top recruiting classes. The Cougars already had landed 6-10 Derek Dawes of Cottonwood High in Salt Lake City and Jesse Pinegar, a 6-9 forward who played with Meads at Brighton. Cleveland also signed 6-8 Jake Chrisman of Provo High and 6-1 Austin Ainge of Gilbert, Ariz., the son of former NBA standout Danny Ainge. As a senior at BYU in 1981, Danny Ainge won the Wooden Award as college basketball's best player.
