Kentucky blues Wildcats recruit Southall charged with selling marijuanaPosted: Friday May 19, 2000 05:57 PM
LA CROSSE, Wis. (AP) -- Michael Southall, one of the top high school basketball players in Wisconsin last season and a Kentucky recruit, was charged Friday with selling marijuana. Southall, 18, of West Salem, made admissions to investigators after he was confronted with a videotape that showed him smoking marijuana at a party, according to a criminal complaint. "Southall stated he has sold marijuana to other kids his own age and often times he sold marijuana to them in the West Salem Village Court," the complaint said. Southall said he sold one-eighth ounce quantities in the deals, the complaint said. "He stated he has not been doing this for very long and he thought since he was only middling the deals that he was not really a dealer," the complaint said. Investigators found evidence of marijuana in Southall's car and in his home, the complaint said. Southall was charged with one count of delivery of marijuana, a felony punishable by up to 4 1/2 years in prison, and one count of possession of marijuana, a misdemeanor, which carries a maximum punishment of six months in jail. Southall appeared in La Crosse County Circuit Court Friday and Judge Dale Pasell continued a $100 signature bond. Pasett set a preliminary hearing on the felony for May 30, prosecutor Todd Bjerke said. "I have no comment," Southall said as he left the courtroom. Southall, a 6-foot-10, 225-pound center, averaged 20.7 points, 13 rebounds and 6.7 blocked shots per game last season for West Salem High School. He had a scholarship to play basketball at Kentucky. Following Southall's arrest, Kentucky coach Tubby Smith said the scholarship could be revoked. "He's obviously done something he's going to have to suffer the consequences for," Smith said at the time. Smith was traveling to a golf tournament in Arkansas on Friday and was unavailable for comment, said Brooks Downing, associate media relations director at Kentucky.
