LOS ANGELES SPARKS
After just two seasons, the Sparks already have their third head coach. Orlando Woolridge, the first former NBA player to coach in the WNBA, will try his hand at guiding a team centered around Lisa Leslie. Woolridge spent 15 years playing basketball in the NBA and Italy. He took over as the Sparks head coach on July 31, 1998, replacing Julie Rousseau.
"Defensively, we play as a team," Woolridge said. "We help each other out; one player has another player's back. Offensively, we play together. It's not a one-woman show. It's not a two-woman show. We move the ball around. We get everybody involved. We have a lot of people who will get quality minutes and quality time. When you're playing that system and that style, it's a fun system to play in -- the players enjoy it and it's fun to coach."
Not only will the coach be different for the Sparks this season, but their starting lineup will probably change drastically too. Olympic gold medalist and NCAA champion Pamela McGee announced her retirement May 21, and center Haixia Zheng, who led the WNBA in shooting percentage in 1997, has decided to remain in China this summer.
With the fourth pick in all four rounds of the WNBA draft, the Sparks were able to add quality players to their roster. All four should vye for playing time. Woolridge was looking to strengthen his frontline and he did, drafting DeLisha Milton, Clarisse Machanguana and La'Keshia Frett -- all three played in the ABL. The Sparks also took guard Ukari Figgs, a member of the 1999 Purdue national championship team and MVP of the tournament.
SI for Women's bottom line: The Sparks didn't address their primary need in the draft -- they still don't have a bona fide point guard -- and are therefore headed for another underachieving season.
