MINNESOTA LYNX
After winning two championships with the ABL's Columbus Quest, coach Brian Agler left the league to become a coach in the WNBA. Agler is hoping for the same success in the WNBA -- and with the same players.
Agler had such a good combination of players on his Quest team that he decided to bring them with him to the WNBA. In the 1999 draft, Agler draft four of his former players -- Tonya Edwards, Andrea Lloyd, Sonja Tate and Angie Potthoff. He added former Quest player Katie Smith in the expansion draft. The Lynx also drafted Australian Trisha Fallon, who won a bronze medal at the 1996 Olympics.
"We did have some success in Columbus, and we felt like we played a pretty good brand of basketball," Agler said. "Whether it works in the WNBA remains to be seen. We put a tremendous amount of emphasis on defensive. We run a motion offense. We don't really have any player that is a back-to-the-basket player, so we are probably going to have a different look than a lot of the teams in the league, but sometimes it pays to be a little different."
SI for Women's bottom line: Five members of two-time ABL champion Columbus rejoin coach Agler for another run at the top. They won't make the playoffs in this league just yet, but their built-in chemistry should bring home a .500 record.
