ORLANDO MIRACLE
Coach Carolyn Peck is hoping to continue her collegiate success at the professional level. Peck, whose Purdue team won the 1999 NCAA championship, is the biggest name for the expansion franchise. She, along with the rookies in the WNBA, is adjusting to the professional basketball schedule.
"The biggest change has been the lack of preparation time," Peck said. "At the college level you have a lot of time to prepare. Here you don't have a lot of time to prepare for your first game."
Shannon Johnson has emerged as the team's point guard and one of the leaders, along with 6-foot-1 Sheri Sam.
Orlando does have plenty of young talent, including Connecticut's all-time leading scorer, Nykesha Sales, and former Georgia Tech star Kisha Ford, who spent last season with the Liberty.
"Things have gone well for us as far as putting a whole team together," Peck said. "Everyone has done whatever the team needed."
Peck failed to land her former Purdue players in the draft -- Stephanie White-McCarty went to Charlotte in the second round and Ukari Figgs went to the Sparks in the third round.
SI for Women's bottom line: Orlando's solid starting five -- Sales, Johnson, Phillips, Sam and C Taj McWilliams (ABL's Rage) -- must get quickly and stay healthy for the Miracle to avoid the Eastern Conference cellar.
