MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Kristin Folkl, a 6-foot-2 forward from St. Louis, is the first player assigned to Minnesota's expansion WNBA team.

Folkl, a member of the 1997-98 All-Pac-10 first team, led Stanford in scoring (18.9 ppg) and rebounding (9.2 rpg) last season.

"I like challenges," Folkl said at a news conference Tuesday. "I feel like all my life I've been faced with one challenge or another. And I just see this as a great opportunity to do some good and to be able to, conquer something that a lot of people never thought would come to fruition."

Folkl tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee in March, had surgery and decided to pass up her remaining year of basketball at Stanford. She signed a 3-year contract with the WNBA April 28, but she wasn't available to play in the 1998 season because of her rehabilitation.

Folkl also helped Stanford's volleyball team to two consecutive NCAA championships.
