New York to host WNBA All-Star Game Posted: Friday February 19, 1999 07:55 PM
NEW YORK (Ticker) -- The WNBA's inaugural All-Star Game on July 14 will be held at "The World's Most Famous Arena." The league, entering its third season, announced Thursday that the New York Liberty and Madison Square Garden have been selected to host the game. Madison Square Garden, the home of the New York Knicks, hosted the NBA All-Star game in 1998, 1968, 1955 and 1954. "New York, with its wonderful basketball history and its outstanding support of the Liberty, is the ideal place for the first WNBA All-Star Game," WNBA president Val Ackerman said. The WNBA will begin its season without competition as the ABL folded December 22. The regular season runs from June 10-August 8. "We look forward to showcasing our best players amid the exicting atmosphere of Madison Square Garden in front of a national television audience and our great New York fans," Ackerman said. Balloting will take place in arenas around the league and online as well as at selected retail stores in the 12 WNBA markets
