HOUSTON, Texas (Reuters) -- Guard Kim Perrot of the two-time defending WNBA champion Houston Comets was able to take two short walks and greet family and friends on Thursday after having a brain tumor removed on Wednesday. Perrot underwent a five-hour operation at the M.D. Anderson Medical Center after revealing that she had lung cancer that had spread to her brain. A magnetic imaging resonance exam on Thursday showed that the tumor was removed with no signs of clotting. Dr. Raymond Sawaya, who performed the surgery, said the 32-year-old Perrot was progressing well and showed no neurological problems. Along with taking short walks and seeing family members and teammates, Perrot also watched a videotaped greeting from players at the WNBA veterans camp in Orlando, Florida. She is scheduled to undergo two weeks of radiation therapy followed by intravenous chemotherapy to treat the lung cancer. The 5-foot-5 guard led the Comets in 1998 with 4.7 assists per game and 85 steals as they compiled a 27-3 record, tops in the WNBA. She averaged 8.5 points on 40 percent shooting (88-of-218) and grabbed 3.1 rebounds per game. She also become the emotional leader of a team that included two-time league Most Valuable Player Cynthia Cooper and the popular Sheryl Swoopes.
