WNBA Roundup Liberty beat Sparks in physical game to win 7th in a row
NEW YORK (AP) -- Becky Hammon scored 16 of her 21 points in the second half of a physical game as the New York Liberty beat the Los Angeles Sparks 82-69 Sunday for their seventh consecutive victory. New York's Tamika Whitmore was ejected with just over three minutes remaining after a flagrant foul that sent Sparks star Lisa Leslie sprawling under the basket. There were a total of five technical fouls in the game. Tari Phillips, Crystal Robinson and Whitmore added 13 points apiece for New York (8-3), which tied the franchise record for consecutive wins. The Liberty won their first seven games in 1997, the WNBA's inaugural season. Leslie had 26 points and 11 rebounds for the Sparks, who lost their third straight game after opening the season 9-0.
Comets 67, Fire 57HOUSTON -- Tina Thompson and Janeth Arcain each scored 22 points as Houston extended its winning streak to eight games. Arcain scored 16 points in the second half. She had six points in an 8-0 run to close out the game after Portland closed within 59-57. Jackie Stiles shot 7-for-15 and led Portland with 17 points. Sophia Witherspoon added 14 for the Fire, who lost for the third time in nine games.
Rockers 54, Sol 35MIAMI -- Chasity Melvin scored 11 points and Merlakia Jones added 10 as Cleveland ran its winning streak to five. The Rockers (8-3), who have won seven of eight, took command with an 11-0 run early in the second half and went on to lead by as many as 24 points as Miami (5-5) endured its worst offensive performance in franchise history. Elena Baranova led the Sol with nine points.
Monarchs 85, Sting 82 OTCHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Yolanda Griffith had 23 points and 16 rebounds as Sacramento extended Charlotte's losing streak to a franchise-record seven games. Tangela Smith scored 16 points for Sacramento. Ticha Penicheiro added 12 points, Kedra Holland-Corn scored 11 and Ruthie Bolton-Holifield 10. Andrea Stinson scored 24 points for Charlotte, which has lost three of its last five games in overtime. Allison Feaster scored 17 and Tammy Sutton-Brown had 15 for the Sting, who are off to the worst start in franchise history at 1-10.
