AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- The Detroit Shock were involved in an unexpected struggle, but they were sure happy to have the reeling Seattle Storm in for a matinee matchup. Dominique Canty scored 15 points and All-Star Wendy Palmer added 12 to lead the Shock to a 61-56 win over the Storm, who suffered their 12th loss in 13 games. "This was a really important win for us," Detroit coach Nancy Lieberman-Cline said. "I told the team it's a good sign when you don't play your best basketball and you still win the game." The Storm held a 46-44 lead when Sonja Henning hit a 3-pointer with 8:18 remaining. But the Shock scored the next eight points to take control. A pair of free throws by Palmer with 7:55 left tied the game and Detroit took the lead for good on a three-point play by rookie Anna DeForge with 7:20 remaining. A basket by Canty and a free throw by rookie Edwina Brown increased the advantage to 52-46. "Everyone was ready to play and the crowd was fantastic," Canty said. "I wish we had more afternoon games like this." But Jamie Redd, who led Seattle with 17 points, scored on a layup and a 3-pointer to pull the Storm with 52-51 with 4:47 left. She was 4-of-7 from 3-point range. "I've been struggling from the three-point line, but in the shootaround before the game I felt good about the shots," Redd said. "I thought I had a good game today. So many times we've been so close and come up short. We have to keep working hard each game and at some point it will turn around for us." A pair of free throws and a short jumper by Brown sparked a 7-2 run, opening a 59-53 lead for the Shock. A 3-pointer by rookie Andrea Garner pulled Seattle within three with 39 seconds left, but a pair of free throws by Brown with 8.6 seconds remaining sealed the win. Palmer today was named as a reserve to Monday's All-Star Game in Phoenix.
