PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Gordana Grubin and Adrain Williams added to the Phoenix Mercury's mastery of the Washington Mystics. Grubin scored 15 points and Williams added 13 and a career-high 11 rebounds as the Mercury remained unbeaten against the Mystics with a 71-65 victory. Phoenix improved its all-time mark to 8-0 against Washington. The Mystics were without Chamique Holdsclaw, who was not with the team due to the death of her grandmother. The Mystics held firm and took their final lead on a basket by Vicky Bullett for a 63-62 advantage with 4:24 remaining. Williams answered 28 seconds later with a basket that gave Phoenix the lead for good. Lisa Harrison scored for a 66-63 lead before Washington rookie Stacey Dales-Schuman's basket cut the deficit to one point with 2:47 to go. Williams restored the three-point cushion with a layup with 46 seconds remaining. Washington called a timeout but tough defense by the Mercury forced a shot-clock violation. Tracy Reid made 1-of-2 foul shots and Grudin added a pair from the line for the final margin. Dales-Schuman scored 15 points and Bullett added 13 for Washington. The Mystics fell to 1-1 and have never won consecutive games to open the season. |
