Andrew Golota received a citation for failure to control his vehicle. AP

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) -- Heavyweight Andrew Golota was injured and a passenger killed today when their Mercedes-Benz veered into the path of a semi-trailer truck.

Golota, 31, was driving westbound on Interstate 80 when the car went out of control and crossed the median shortly after midnight. He was treated and released from Genesis Medical Center. WOC-AM in Davenport reported that Golota had a broken collarbone.

Tadeusz Godlewski, 49, of Roselle, Ill., was pronounced dead at Genesis hospital. A police officer on the scene had said Godlewski was Golota's trainer, but the fighter's promoter, Main Events of New Jersey, said that was not true.

The driver of the eastbound trailer was not injured, police said.

Golota was ticketed for failing to control the vehicle. Police did not specify the cause of the accident.

Golota (34-4, 28 knockouts) was ranked ninth in the heavyweight division in the WBC's December ratings.

In his most recent fight, on Nov. 20, Golota was stopped at 1:49 of the 10th round by Michael Grant, the North American Boxing Federation champion.
