Mike Tyson would need to beat British heavyweight champ Julius Francis to have a chance at facing Shannon Briggs. Allsport |
NEW YORK (AP) -- Mike Tyson could fight Shannon Briggs in March
in New Jersey. But first a few things must happen:
Tyson stays out of trouble.
Tyson beats British heavyweight champion Julius Francis on Jan.
29 in Manchester, England.
Tyson gets a New Jersey boxing license. The proposed bout is
for the Meadowlands complex in East Rutherford.
Tyson doesn't fight someone else.
"We're also talking to Lou Savarese and to a couple of other
names," Shelly Finkel, Tyson's boxing adviser, said Friday from
Las Vegas.
Beating Francis, who has a 21-7 record against mostly mediocre
opponents, does not appear an obstacle.
Chances also appear good he will be licensed in New Jersey
because he has been reinstated by the Nevada State Athletic
Commission. The Nevada group revoked his license after he was
disqualified for biting Evander Holyfield's ears in 1997.
Larry Hazzard, commissioner of the New Jersey State Athletic
Control Board, said he has not received an application from Tyson.
"I expect that if he does apply, it would be our obligation to
treat him as any other fighters who applies at this juncture,"
Hazzard said.
