LONDON (Reuters) -- Mike Tyson has been summoned to appear before the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBC) following his controversial defeat of fellow American Lou Savarese in Glasgow this past Saturday.

The Board wants to question Tyson about the punches he threw after the referee stopped the bout in the first round and about his post-fight comments directed at world champion Lennox Lewis.

BBBC general secretary Simon Block said on Wednesday Tyson had been called to appear before the Board on August 9.

But Block said that because Tyson was not a British resident, he had the option of suggesting three other dates for the hearing which must fall before August 31.

"Mr Tyson has been advised of his rights in this matter and that in the event of his failure to appear or non-response, the stewards reserve the right to consider what further action may be necessary after this date," the BBBC said in a statement.

Tyson returned to the United States this past Sunday amid calls for him to be banned from boxing.

A storm of protest followed his antics during his 38-second demolition of the hopelessly inferior Savarese.

Tyson lunged for his opponent after the bout had been stopped, catching referee John Coyle on the head and knocking him to the canvas in his frenzied efforts to get at Savarese.

After the bout Tyson launched a tirade about what he would like to do to Lewis.
