Making progress Duran recovering from injuries sustained in car crashUpdated: Friday October 05, 2001 7:14 PM
BUENOS AIRES (AP) -- Former world boxing champ Roberto Duran "is progressing very well" after suffering a collapsed lung and several broken ribs in an auto accident in Buenos Aires, media reports said Friday. The Telam news agency quoted physicians at the hospital caring for Duran as saying the boxer, while unable to receive visitors, was improving and might be released over the weekend. Duran's agent in Argentina, Oscar Ruiz Diaz, who was also injured in the crash, remained in a level-3 coma Friday, Telam said. Duran, 52, a native of Panama, was riding in a car with three other people, including his son Luis, when it collided early Thursday with another vehicle and then a wall along a highway. All those in the car were injured. Physicians said that Luis Duran, 27, had suffered a hematoma in the kidney area but was doing well. Duran traveled to Argentina to promote a Caribbean music record. He was also invited to attend a football match to honor former football star Diego Maradona. Duran, who held titles in four boxing weight classes, was also in Buenos Aires to present a member of parliament with a pair of boxing gloves. The lawmaker, a friend of Duran's, had returned to parliament for the first time since a serious car accident in June.
