Eubank proposes fund for Watson

LONDON (AP) -- Chris Eubank wants to set up a fund for Michael Watson after a court approved a compensation settlement of only 400,000 pounds ($560,000) for the brain damage Watson suffered in the ring.

Watson sustained the injuries in a WBO middleweight title fight against Eubank in 1991. He now uses a wheelchair.

Two years ago, the High Court ruled that the British Boxing Board of Control was liable for Watson's injuries because ringside resuscitation facilities were inadequate.

On Monday, the court said Watson's damages claim could have been worth up to 2.5 million pounds ($3.5 million), but the cash-strapped British board was not in a position to pay that.

The court said the 400,000-pound ($560,000) sum "is sadly a long way short of the damages that he would have received had the defendants had the money or had they been insured."

Eubank said Tuesday he would seek to launch a special fund to redress the financial balance.

"Michael Watson was the people's champion," Eubank said in a statement. "He entertained the people. They loved his gentle manner outside the ring and they loved him inside the ring. "I think it's a little unjust that a fund has not been set up so

that people who support him and are aware of his plight can send in money."

"If all Michael's supporters send in 5 pounds ($7) each to the fund then this would make up the monies that he's not going to be paid from the BBBC."
