WBC women's champion sues promoter Posted: Wednesday December 11, 2002 10:20 AMDETROIT (AP) -- WBC women's champion Christy Martin is suing the promoter of her sparsely attended Dec. 6 fight with Mia St. John, claiming she hasn't been paid. The fight in the Pontiac Silverdome almost didn't happen as Martin threatened to pull out, saying she didn't received her US$300,000 purse before the match. Martin ended up fighting St. John and scored an unanimous 10-round decision. After the fight, Martin said she feared she wouldn't be paid by promoter Peter Klamka. "I just fought 10 rounds so that he can make money, and now I'm not getting paid," she said. Martin's attorney Michael Novak filed the lawsuit Tuesday. "It is shameful," Novak said in a press release. He called Klamka "a novice promoter attempting to gain entry into the boxing business." Klamka said Martin breached her contract by failing to attend promotional events and ultimately damaged the event. Klamka maintains the US$300,000 purse Novak quotes as the cap on her fee and the actual payment is dependent on pay-per-view sales. The promoter said there is no way Martin can be paid until he knows how many people tuned in. Klamka estimated he may know those figures in 7-to-10 days, and vowed to pay the boxer once he has all the information. "It's not a question that we never intended to pay her," Klamka said. "We don't know what we made, and Christy knows this because she's been in boxing for a long time."
