World-class bout Mitchell to challenge for Calzaghe's WBO titlePosted: Wednesday April 23, 2003 10:10 AMNEWCASTLE, England (AP) -- Unbeaten Welshman Joe Calzaghe will make his 13th defense of the WBO supermiddleweight title next month against former WBA titlist Byron Mitchell. The American challenger, 25-2-1, lost his title last month in a split decision to IBF champion Sven Ottke in Berlin. Calzaghe, 35-0, will face Mitchell at Newcastle's Telewest Arena on May 24. "Mitchell is a world-class performer and will give me the type of fight that I am craving for," said Calzaghe, who has beaten four former world champions -- Chris Eubank, Robin Reid, Richie Woodhall and Charles Brewer -- and has held onto his title for more than five years. "I have followed his career closely over the last four years as I knew that one day I would face him."
