Charlie Strong and Texas are deep in negotiations to make him the next head coach in Austin. Texas has offered Strong a five-year, $25-million contract to be the next head coach of the Longhorns, according to a source.

One potential issue could be Strong's buyout at Louisville, which is more than $4.3 million. Tax assistance from the buyout would be more than $1 million.

"I would just say that discussions are ongoing," said a source with knowledge of the negotiations.

The general compensation of the contract -- years and salary -- does not appear to be an issue. But that could change depending on what happens with a potential buyout.

Texas athletic director Steve Patterson encountered something similar when he was at Arizona State. When Patterson served as the COO of Arizona State's athletic department, ASU attempted to hire SMU coach June Jones. The deal fell apart during negotiations over tax issues related to Jones' $2.1 million buyout. Patterson then essentially took over the coaching search and hired Pittsburgh coach Todd Graham.

An agreement between Strong and Louisville is no longer expected to be finalized Saturday morning. reported that Strong told his staff at a 9 a.m. meeting Saturday that he hadn't made a decision on taking the Texas job.

The Austin-American Statesman reported last night that Vanderbilt coach James Franklin remains Texas' back-up option if things don't work out with Strong.

Strong is 37-15 in four years at Louisville, including 23-3 the last two seasons.
