Stephen Fleming

Full name: Stephen Paul Fleming (captain)
Known as: Stephen Fleming

Born: April 1, 1973.

Bats: Left-handed
Bowls: Right-arm medium pace bowler

Played for: New Zealand, Canterbury

One-Day Debut: vs. India at Napier, First ODI, 1993/94
One-Day Matches: 100

Total Runs: 2,848
Average Score: 32.36
Highest Score: 116

Total Wickets: 1
Runs per wicket: 28.00
Best Result: 1-8

Appointed captain in 1997. Took him several seasons before posting his initial centuries at international level, but finally achieved that at ODI level in 1996 in the West Indies, 1996 and in 1997 in test in England. Fleming has played many of his best innings when they were most needed but has a weakness against the quicker ball angled across him and too often falls to a catch in the slip area.

Dion Nash

Full name: Dion Joseph Nash (vice-captain)
Known as: Dion Nash

Born: Nov. 20, 1971.

Bats: Right-handed
Bowls: Right-arm medium pace bowler

Played for: New Zealand, Middlesex. Otago, Northern Districts

One-Day Debut: vs. Zimbabwe at Bulawayo, First ODI, 1992/93
One-Day Matches: 58

Total Runs: 435
Average Score: 14.50
Highest Score: 40

Total Wickets: 47
Runs per wicket: 41.23
Best Result: 4-38

Nash probably will be remembered for the 1994 test match against England at Lord's when he took 11 wickets for 169 runs and scored 56 in his only innings. Using the slope he got such good away movement that the right-handers found him almost unplayable. Middlesex offered him a contract the following season and although he had a stress fracture, he went. Following his return from England, Nash completely lost his form. However, he worked hard to remedy his problems and was recalled to the national squad in 1998. Economical bowler and useful lower-order batsman.

Geoffrey Allott

Full name: Geoffrey Ian Allott
Known as: Geoffrey Allott

Born: Dec. 24, 1971.

Bats: Right-handed
Bowls: Left-arm medium-fast bowler

Played for: New Zealand, Canterbury

One-Day Debut: vs. England at Napier, Third ODI, 1996/97
One-Day Matches: 13

Total Runs: 14
Average Score: 4.66
Highest Score: 7

Total Wickets: 23
Runs per wicket: 21.08
Best Result: 4-35.

Was initially called up for the 1995/96 test series against Zimbabwe when New Zealand was undergoing an injury crisis. Although he was successful to a degree he was not selected for the following one-day international series or the 1996 World Cup. A great showing for New Zealand A against England in 1997 earned him a recall to the national squad. Allott bowls a good, accurate stock ball and is prepared to bend his back to generate extra pace.

Nathan Astle

Full name: Nathan John Astle
Known as: Nathan Astle

Born: Sept. 15, 1971.

Bats: Right-handed
Bowls: Right-arm medium pace bowler

Played for: New Zealand, Nottinghamshire, Canterbury

One-Day Debut: vs. West Indies at Auckland, First ODI, 1994/95
One-Day Matches: 82

Total Runs: 2,768
Average Score: 35.48
Highest Score: 120

Total Wickets: 54
Runs per wicket: 33.55
Best Result: 4-43

A confident opening batsman who can get innings off to a rousing start, Astle has exhibited the ability to continue well with three one-day international centuries. Not a traditional batsman, Astle favors playing the cross-batted shots off the front foot. Also a useful and at times miserly bowler.

Chris Cairns

Full name: Chris Lance Cairns
Known as: Chris Cairns

Born: June 13, 1970.

Bats: Right-handed
Bowls: Right-arm medium-fast bowler

Played for: New Zealand, Canterbury, Nottinghamshire, Northern Districts

One-Day Debut: vs. England at Wellington, Second ODI, 1990/91
One-Day Matches: 101

Total Runs: 2,340
Average Score: 26.89
Highest Score: 115

Total Wickets: 93
Runs per wicket: 33.08
Best Result: 5-42

After his test debut against Australia at the age of 19 and it appeared only a matter of time before he fulfilled his potential. However, his bowling action rendered him injury prone, which prevented him from bowling for an extended period of time. Even when Cairns was unfit to bowl he was still selected for his batting abilities. At the end of 1995 Cairns made his return to the international stage on the tour of India. His batting has been consistent and his bowling is even better, as he has shown even more accuracy.

Simon Doull

Full name: Simon Blair Doull
Known as: Simon Doull

Born: Aug. 6, 1969.

Bats: Right-handed
Bowls: Right-arm medium pace bowler

Played for: New Zealand, Northern Districts

One-Day Debut: vs. Zimbabwe at Bulawayo, First ODI, 1992/93
One-Day Matches: 40

Total Runs: 172
Average Score: 12.28
Highest Score: 22

Total Wickets: 34
Runs per wicket: 41.08
Best Result: 4-25

A dangerous bowler who can swing the ball both ways, Doull is at times expensive. He has worked on having a more consistent line and length. Could possibly flourish in the English conditions. Doull can also be a useful batsman down the order.

Chris Harris

Full name: Chris Zinzan Harris
Known as: Chris Harris

Born: Nov. 20, 1969.

Bats: Left-handed
Bowls: Right-arm medium pace bowler

Played for: New Zealand, Canterbury

One-Day Debut: vs. Australia at Sydney, World Series, 1990/91
One-Day Matches: 127

Total Runs: 2,316
Average Score: 30.88
Highest Score: 130

Total Wickets: 121
Runs per wicket: 34.37
Best Result: 5-42.

Harris is a cricketer particularly suited to the one-day style of play. A powerful hitter of the ball. He has the patience and ability to score a century even if the top order crumbles. Harris scored a memorable 130 against Australia in the 1996 World Cup quarterfinal. No real penetration in his bowling but he can be awkward for batsmen, which is useful in the last over of the game when he can pick up valuable wickets. An athletic fielder with deadly aim.

Matthew Hart

Full name: Matthew Norman Hart
Known as: Matthew Hart

Born: May 16, 1972.

Bats: Left-handed
Bowls: Left-arm spinner

Played for: New Zealand, Northern Districts

One-Day Debut: vs. Pakistan at Auckland, Fourth ODI, 1993/94
One-Day Matches: 11

Total Runs: 49
Average Score: 8.16
Highest Score: 16

Total Wickets: 13
Runs per wicket: 26.69
Best Result: 5-22.

An orthodox left-arm spinner, although Hart lacks penetration he does have the ability to tie batsmen down.

Matthew Horne

Full name: Matthew Jeffery Horne
Known as: Matthew Horne

Born: Feb. 5, 1970.

Bats: Right-handed
Bowls: Right-arm medium pace bowler

Played for: New Zealand, Otago, Auckland

One-Day Debut: vs. Sri Lanka at Christchurch, Second ODI, 1996/97
One-Day Matches: 36

Total Runs: 641
Average Score: 18.85
Highest Score: 61

Total Wickets: --
Runs per wicket: --
Best Result: --

A stylish and forceful middle-order batsman Horne can also open the innings. Has been inconsistent in the past. Forced his way into the national side in the 1997/98 season with 600 runs in eight domestic games. Horne has bowled at test but never at the one-day international level.

Gavin Larsen

Full name: Gavin Rolf Larsen
Known as: Gavin Larsen

Born: Sept. 27, 1962.

Bats: Right-handed
Bowls: Right-arm medium pace bowler

Played for: New Zealand, Wellington

One-Day Debut: vs. India at Dundedin, Triangular Series, 1989/90
One-Day Matches: 113

Total Runs: 599
Average Score: 14.26
Highest Score: 37

Total Wickets: 107
Runs per wicket: 34.91
Best Result: 4-24

A middle-order batsman Larsen was at one point merely concerned with retaining his slot with Wellington. However the need in one-day cricket for the fifth bowler and his work to make himself into an economical bowler is what has put him in the position he enjoys today. Keeps ball just short of a length and moves it off the seam and is another who may relish English conditions. In the 1994 tour of England, Larsen was named vice captain.

Craig McMillan

Full name: Craig Douglas McMillan
Known as: Craig McMillan

Born: Sept. 13, 1976.

Bats: Right-handed
Bowls: Right-arm medium pace bowler

Played for: New Zealand, Canterbury

One-Day Debut: vs. Sri Lanka at Hyderabad, Independence Cup, 1996/97 One-Day Matches: 39

Total Runs: 911

Average Score: 25.30
Highest Score: 86

Total Wickets: 16
Runs per wicket: 30.12
Best Result: 2-17

McMillan is a punishing batsman. In October 1998, McMillan narrowly escaped a penalty for unacceptable dissent after an ICC Official Hearing in Dhaka. McMillan was accused of dissent after being given out caught at the wicket in a match against Zimbabwe. However, the only penalty imposed was a severe reprimand, and a warning as to future conduct. McMillan has a useful, bustling style of bowling.

Adam Parore

Full name: Adam Craig Parore (wicketkeeper)
Known as: Adam Parore

Born: Jan. 23, 1971.

Bats: Right-handed
Bowls: --

Played for: New Zealand, Auckland

One-Day Debut: vs. Zimbabwe at Bulawayo, First ODI, 1992/93
One-Day Matches: 114

Total Runs: 2,670
Average Score: 30
Highest Score: 108

Catches: 63
Stumpings: 17

A fast-scoring, versatile batsman, more a pusher and nudger than big-hitter who has made centuries at both test and one-day level. Parore is capable of anchoring an innings, batting at No. 3 or forcing the pace at No. 6 in one-day cricket. One of his biggest weaknesses in judging a run, and as a result he has been involved in many run outs. Parore is an agile wicketkeeper.

Roger Twose

Full name: Roger Graham Twose
Known as: Roger Twose

Born: April 17, 1968.

Bats: Left-handed
Bowls: Right-arm medium pace bowler

Played for: New Zealand, Wellington, Warwickshire, Central Districts

One-Day Debut: vs. India at Jamshedpur, First Odi, 1995/96
One-Day Matches: 36

Total Runs: 969
Average Score: 30.28
Highest Score: 92

Total Wickets: 4
Runs per wicket: 59.25
Best Result: 2-31

Born in England but, after failing to win selection for the national side, he moved to New Zealand. An attacking batsman, Twose was originally an opener but now more often used at No. 4. His reading of the pace of the game can be instrumental in the innings. Useful partnership breaker, Twose's bowling can be expensive.

Daniel Vettori

Full name: Daniel Luca Vettori
Known as: Daniel Vettori

Born: Jan. 21, 1979.

Bats: Left-handed
Bowls: Left-arm slow bowler

Played for: Northern Districts, New Zealand

One-Day Debut: vs. Sri Lanka at Christchurch, Second ODI, 1996/97
One-Day Matches: 38

Total Runs: 188
Average Score: 12.53
Highest Score: 25

Total Wickets: 27
Runs per wicket: 43.55
Best Result: 4-49

Vettori made his international debut as an 18-year-old, the youngest cricketer to play for the New Zealand. Can be expensive and has an economy rate of nearly five runs an over but is still on a rapid learning curve and is likely to be around for several more World Cups. Also a useful lower-order batsman.

Carl Bulfin

Full name: Carl Edwin Bulfin
Known as: Carl Bulfin

Born: Aug. 19, 1973.

Bats: Right-handed
Bowls: Right-arm medium-fast bowler

Played for: New Zealand, Wellington, Central Districts

One-Day Debut: vs. South Africa at Napier, Fourth ODI, 1998/99 (match abandoned)
One-Day Matches: 3

Total Runs: 9
Average Score: 9.00
Highest Score: 7*

Total Wickets: 0
Runs per wicket: --
Best Result: --

Uncapped at test level, Bulfin made an uninspired one-day international debut during the recent home series against South Africa.
