South Africa mourns semifinal defeat

The pages of South African newspapers were laden with melancholy Friday over the national teams failure to qualify for the World Cup final.

    The one-sided World Cup final proved a failure, lacking the thrill and tension of the Australia-South Africa semifinal, which may go down as one of the finest one-day matches in history.

    Australia advances, World Cup semi ends in tie
    To come so near,and yet finish so far. Lance Klusener battled gamely for South Africa in the closing moments of the game, but in the end all the Proteas could manage was 213 all out. Although this equaled Australia's innings, the men from Down Under will advance. Even though both teams finished the Super Sixes with six points apiece, Australia possessed a superior run rate. After an early collapse in the Australian innings Steve Waugh was instrumental in rebuilding it with the assistance of Michael Bevan.
