Fat lady doesn't sing for Windies Late centuries help Griqualand West to drawPosted: Tuesday November 17, 1998 05:27 PM
KIMBERLEY, South Africa (AP) -- Griqualand West broke a century-old club record during a second-innings of 435 and forced a draw with the West Indies in their four-day tour match Tuesday. Play was halted and stumps were drawn at 4:30 p.m. after Griqualand scored more than double the runs necessary to force the West Indies to bat a second time. Griqualand West added the 435 to its first-innings of 271. The West Indies, preparing for the start of its first test on November 26 reached 466 all out in its first innings. Inspired by Pay Symcox's half century off 22 balls, tailenders Finley Brooker and Wendell Bossenger combined for an eighth-wicket partnership of 148, breaking the previous record of 129 set against Eastern Province in the early 1890s. Brooker reached 111 before being run out and Bossenger added 102. Symcox's 50 came in only 28 minutes, hitting for 43 runs against legspinner Shivnarine Chanderpaul in only two overs. That followed a defiant sixth-wicket partnership of 94 between overnight pairing Piet Barnard and Brooker. Barnard batted for 192 minutes for 76 and together with Brooker had taken his side to within two runs of avoiding an innings defeat.
