Waugh, Warne fined Bookmaker stayed in the same hotels as the AustraliansPosted: Wednesday December 09, 1998 11:41 AM
ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) -- The illegal bookmaker in the center of Australia's biggest cricket scandal telephoned Mark Waugh and Shane Warne while staying in the same hotel as the Australian cricket team in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Both Waugh and Warne were fined by the Australian Cricket Board (ACB) for dealing with a man they knew as "Pinky" or "John" during the four-nation tournament in Sri Lanka in September 1994. The bookmaker also used an ex-Indian test all-rounder and a prominent Indian cricket journalist to establish contacts with leading international cricketers. The bookmaker was staying at the Hotel Lanka Oberoi, the official team hotel for Australia, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, during the one-day series that was won by India. It is alleged that the Australian duo advised the Delhi-based millionaire bookmaker on "weather and pitch conditions." The Chennai (Madras)-based journalist, who was forced to resign after confessing his dealings with bookmakers, said it would be a waste of time trying to find the so-called "Pinky" or "John." "Looking for him would be a waste of time," the journalist said on the condition of anonymity. "There are 3,000 bookmakers in Delhi. You would not know where he might be."
