Internal matter ICC distances itself from Australian payments rowPosted: Wednesday December 09, 1998 09:39 AM
LONDON (Reuters) -- The International Cricket Council (ICC) distanced itself Wednesday from the payments row involving Australians Mark Waugh and Shane Warne. The pair admitted they took money from an Indian bookmaker in 1994 in exchange for information during the tour of Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The Australian Cricket Board (ACB) fined the pair in 1995 but hushed up the affair. ICC chief executive David Richards said: "It has always been a basic principle that each country is responsible for the discipline of its own players. "At the time that this incident arose in early 1995 it was quite clear that the ACB had the responsibility and power to deal with the matter and they did deal with the matter. "At the time they made it clear they would like us to treat the matter as totally confidential and of course we have respected that confidentiality over the intervening time." The ICC is the world cricket's governing body.
