Function over form West Indies batsmen struggle against South Africa APosted: Saturday December 19, 1998 12:41 PM
PIETERMARITZBURG, South Africa (Reuters) -- West Indies struggled to 77 for three after bad light limited the opening day's play in the four-day match against South Africa A to 34.2 overs on Saturday. A polished 27 not out by Shivnarine Chanderpaul allowed the touring side to recover from 48 for three after Stuart Williams (four), Clayton Lambert (13) and captain Carl Hooper (24) had been removed cheaply. Play began an hour late due to wet run-ups and, after South Africa A captain Nic Pothas won the toss, he asked the tourists to bat on a pitch which offered movement off the seam. All the seam bowlers proved difficult to play. Lance Klusener, who regularly found the edge and beat the bat, was the pick with one for eight off seven overs while Makhaya Ntini took one for 12 off five overs. West Indies continued their poor batting form of the first two test matches, both of which they lost. Williams was first to go in the fifth over, when he got a thick edge to a ball from Klusener to be held in the gully by Boeta Dippenaar for four. The first over after drinks saw the end of Hooper, bowled by Justin Kemp for 24. Hooper is captaining the tourists in the absence of Brian Lara. Lambert went 10 minutes before tea to an outside edge off Ntini. He was caught behind.
