CARDIFF, Wales (AP) -- South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis has replaced Pakistan fast bowler Waqar Younis as Glamorgan's overseas player for 1999.

Although the Western Province player will not be available during the five week-long World Cup in May and June during the first half of the county championship, Glamorgan sees Kallis as a great asset. He will team up with the county's Western Province coach, Duncan Fletcher.

Glamorgan captain Matthew Maynard said he has no doubts about the value of signing Kallis, who spent the 1997 season with Middlesex.

"Magnificent -- just about the best we could have made," Maynard said. "Jacques has proved in the last 18 months or so just what a good all-round cricketer he is -- be it test matches or one-day internationals -- and he is still only 24 years old.

"With Tony Cottey and Gary Butcher having left, we have moved quickly to strengthen the side, and I have no doubt at all that Jacques will make a significant impact with us."

Maynard said he wasn't worried that Kallis might not be available for a long period if South Africa has a good run in the World Cup.

"I'm not too concerned," he said. "We know that even if South Africa make the final he is going to be available to play in two-thirds of our matches -- perhaps more -- and such is his talent and commitment he is bound to make a massive contribution."
