BRISBANE, Australia (AP) -- England will go into the limited-overs cricket tri-series against Australia and Sri Lanka with confidence after a solid 44-run win over a Queensland XI, team manager David Graveney said Monday.

He said England's comeback in the test series also had lifted the one-day squad.

"When we have our backs to the wall we get our gloves off and have a scrape," said Graveney, who is also chairman of the England selection panel.

Part of his one-day squad flexed their muscles with a strong win over a combined Queensland XI at the Allan Border field Monday.

In a match shortened to 38 overs a side because of rain, England hit 214-6 and held Queensland, led by domestic Sheffield Shield openers Matt Hayden and Jimmy Maher, to 170-7.

England's lineup included test discards Robert Croft and Alan Mullally.

England's attack, led by Mullally with 1-27 from seven overs, got on top of the home team with only Martin Love (67 not out) and Geoff Foley (28), showing any real resistance.

England plays Australia in the opening tri-series match at the Gabba on Sunday.
