SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- One-day captain Steve Waugh was ruled out of Australia's first two matches in the coming limited-overs cricket tournament with England and Sri Lanka due to a slight left hamstring tear.

Waugh did not field Tuesday as Australia wrapped up the Ashes test series 3-1 with a 98-run win at the SCG and was advised by team physiotherapist Errol Alcott to rest for at least a week.

Australia will name the 13-man squad Wednesday for the first few games and Waugh's withdrawal makes for a difficult decision on the captaincy.

Shane Warne and Mark Waugh have acted as Waugh's deputy in the one-day team in the past year but both have since been caught up in scandal after admitting last month they took money from an Indian bookmaker for weather and pitch information on the 1994 tour of Sri Lanka.

Test skipper Mark Taylor on Tuesday backed Warne as a future captain of the test team.

Australia and England open the 15-match series with a day-nighter in Brisbane on Sunday. Australia's second game is against Sri Lanka in Sydney on January 13.
