New Zealand runs out of wickets To the wirePosted: Tuesday January 12, 1999 02:51 PM
NAPIER, New Zealand (CNN/SI) -- India took it right to the wire, but with one ball and two wickets to spare overhauled New Zealand to win the second of their limited-overs international McLean Park on Tuesday. India got off to a good start chasing New Zealand's 213, as captain Sachin Tendulkar and Saurav Ganguly put together 50 off the first eight overs, before Tendulkar edged a catch to New Zealand's interim captain Dion Nash at slip. Ganguly was next to go with 38 and from that point on India's wickets fell regularly. In the end it came down to wicketkeeper Nayan Mongia after Nikhil Chopra was run out needing 10 runs off 11 balls. Anil Kumble edged the third ball of the final over for four, managed a single off the fourth ball giving Mongia the batting. Mongia hit the final two runs from the penultimate ball of the match, bowled by New Zealand captain Dion Nash. India finished at 214 for eight, with Mongia unbeaten on 30 and Anil Kumble on six. The match contained eight run outs -- five in the New Zealand innings -- which is understood to be a world record for a one-day international. Only one batsman passed 50 in the match, New Zealand opener Matt Horne, whose 61 won him the Man of the match award. The teams are level 1-1 in their series. The third game is at the Basin Reserve in Wellington on Thursday. Recalled opener Bryan Young, Roger Twose, Nash, Daniel Vettori and Chris Harris were all unnecessarily run out, and Adam Parore and Gavin Larsen were stumped in the New Zealand innings. From 165 for four, New Zealand lost five wickets for 32, including three runouts. Sachin Tendulkar finished with three for 34 off 8.3 overs.
