Rain won't affect stats

Larsen record to stand despite abandonment

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -- Gavin Larsen's 100th limited-overs wicket will stand despite Thursday's one-day cricket match between New Zealand and India being abandoned at the Basin Reserve due to rain.

New Zealand and India will replay the third match in the one-day series on the reserve day Friday, but all statistics from Thursday will count.

That would not have been the case 12 months ago but the International Cricket Council (ICC) has since amended the abandonment rule so all performances count.

Besides Larsen, that was encouraging news for new cap Chris Drum and recalled opener Bryan Young, who plundered the Indian bowling for 52 not out off 40 balls.

Rain delayed the start of the game by 45 minutes and also caused a 2 hour, 25-minute delay after seven overs.

After the delayed start, the match was reduced to 44 overs and later to a 32-over game. India did well to reach 208 for four.

But Young set off at a scorching pace and New Zealand was 89 for two off 12.1 overs in pursuit of their revised target of 212 when the rain came for a third and most telling occasion.

Larsen's 100th victim was Sachin Tendulkar, but the veteran Wellington medium pacer's delight was dimmed by the earlier treatment dished out to him by the world's finest one-day batsman.

Tendulkar smashed Larsen for two straight sixes before being stumped for 45 by wicketkeeper Adam Parore.

"He'll do," Larsen said of claiming Tendulkar as his 100th scalp.

"It was a strange day -- I almost went for 10 runs an over and got hit for one of the biggest sixes I've been hit for -- I almost cricked my neck watching it."

Likely teams for Friday.

New Zealand Dion Nash (captain), Matthew Horne, Bryan Young, Craig McMillan, Roger Twose, Chris Cairns, Adam Parore, Chris Harris, Daniel Vettori, Gavin Larsen, Simon Doull, Chris Drum (one to be omitted).

India

Mohammad Azharuddin (captain), Sachin Tendulkar, Saurav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Ajay Jadeja, Robin Singh Sr., Nayan Mongia, Anil Kumble, Nikhil Chopra, Javagal Srinath, Venkatesh Prasad, Hrishikesh Kanitkar (one to be omitted).
