LONDON, April 22 (Reuters) -- England captain Alec Stewart lasted only nine balls in his first county championship appearance of the season when Surrey's rain-delayed game with Worcestershire finally got under way on the third day at New Road on Thursday.

Stewart had made six when he was caught by England colleague Graeme Hick off seamer Stuart Lampitt who went on to dismiss three other England batsmen cheaply.

Graham Thorpe, Alistair Brown and Adam Hollioake all failed to reach double figures as the visitors were dismissed for 223 in 43.4 overs with Ben Hollioake making the top score of 55.

Nineteen year-old Chris Liptrot, signed from Lancashire only two weeks ago, mopped up the Surrey tail to finish with 5-51 in 12.4 overs.

Worcestershire reached 15 for one at the close.

Northamptonshire's new captain Matthew Hayden completed his first century for the county before being run out for 119 against Sussex at Hove.

Russell Warren (88) and David Ripley (50 not out) led Northants to a formidable 391-8 declared before former England paceman Devon Malcolm took four quick wickets to leave Sussex in dire trouble at 79-7 at the close of the second day.

Scottish all-rounder Gavin Hamilton steered Yorkshire to a first innings lead of 113 against Gloucestershire at Headingley adding four wickets to his unbeaten 81 in the Tykes' total of 282.

At Southampton Kent were 18-3 in reply to Hampshire's first innings total of 252 which included 93 from Will Kendall.

And as the rain returned to force an early finish on the third day at Derby, the home side had reached 168-4 against Glamorgan thanks to an unbroken fifth wicket stand of 114 between Adrian Rollins (79 not out) and Dominic Cork (45 not out).

But for the third successive day no play was possible at Lord's between Middlesex and Lancashire, while Warwickshire's match with Somerset was abandoned as a draw.
