Sir Donald Bradman Singleton believes a name change involving Sir Donald Bradman would increase pride in South Australia. Allsport UK/Allsport

ADELAIDE, Australia (AP) -- Australia's leading ad man believes South Australia should throw off its "boring" name and call itself Bradman after its most famous resident.

The 90-year-old Sir Donald Bradman, widely acknowledged as the best cricketer to ever play the game, lives in the state capital of Adelaide.

Sydney-based advertising guru John Singleton told an Adelaide business lunch Bradman was the one realistic alternative to the South Australia tag.

"One name stands above all others in Australia and that's Bradman, Sir Donald Bradman, why can't we call the state Bradman?" Singleton said.

"If he makes 100 can you imagine the celebrations? It would be the most remarkable, amazing thing.

"I think the name of the state, and I'm quite serious about it, should be reconsidered."

Singleton said a change of name would spark a burst of pride and confidence in South Australia.

"I'm telling you to change the name ... can you just imagine for a moment if this state was called Bradman, how proud would Australia feel? How proud would you feel? How proud would Sir Donald Bradman feel?"
