Stunning Smithies England wins thriller, loses series to IndiaPosted: Sunday July 11, 1999 03:30 PM
NOTTINGHAM, England (AP) -- Karen Smithies scored an unbeaten 110 Sunday and belted the winning runs off the last ball as England defeated India by three wickets in the third limited-overs women's international. But India won the series 2-1. India, with an unassailable lead going into the final game at Trent Bridge, batted first and scored 220 for five off its 50 overs. In reply, England skipper Smithies batted through the innings and ensured England overhauled the target by scoring a boundary off the last ball of the match to edge ahead by the narrowest of margins. Hemlata Kala belted 33 off 34 balls in the dying overs to lift India to its highest score of the series, while skipper Chander Aheer scored 58 to establish the innings. Left-arm spinner Clare Connor, who picked up a hat trick in her haul of 5-49 in the second game at Northampton, was again the pick of the English bowlers and finished with 3-43. In reply England, which slumped to an 86-run defeat in the second game after a one-wicket loss in the first, batted defiantly. Smithies' innings innings included an 88-run stand for the second wicket with Connor, who scored 31, after England lost its first wicket with only one run on the board.
