KANDY, Sri Lanka (AP) -- Shane Warne took five wickets for 52 and halted Sri Lanka at 234 all out Friday, the second day of the first test which saw Australia lose captain Steve Waugh and fast bowler Jason Gillespie to a collision.

Waugh broke his nose and Gillespie fractured his right tibia when the two crashed into each other trying to make a catch midway through the first session.

After lying prostrate for about five minutes, both were flown by military helicopter to a hospital in Colombo, 90 kilometers (55 miles) east of Kandy, and underwent operations.

Gillespie is set to return to Australia for further treatment and doctors were to decide Saturday if Waugh was to follow him.

Warne's heroics kept Sri Lanka from taking a commanding lead after the first innings Friday, but Australia's reply only worsened its situation, struggling to 89 for six to start its second innings before stumps were drawn for the day.

After Sri Lanka resumed at 69 for two, Mahela Jayawardana and Aravinda de Silva put on 107 runs for the fourth wicket. De Silva scored 78 off 146 balls, in 180 minutes and hit 13 boundaries.

But then Warne struck quickly, taking the wickets of Jayawardana and Arjuna Ranatunga in the 11 balls immediately before lunch.

Warne continued in the afternoon, albeit at a slower pace and claimed three more wickets to give him five in his 16 overs, including four maidens.

Colin Miller, who took two wickets on Thursday, added another pair to give him four for 62 in 20.3 overs.

The Australian second innings saw the repeat of its first, with Sri Lankan fast bowler Chaminda Vaas and off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan ripping through the top order.

Muralitharan claimed three wickets for 36 in 17 overs while Vaas took two for eight, including Mark Waugh for a duck.

Michael Slater and Ricky Ponting were the only Australians who offered any resistance. Slater scored 27 off 50 balls, with three boundaries, before he was out, and Ponting, who scored 96 in the first innings, added an unbeaten 22.
