Wait a while Ex-England captain supports second divisionPosted: Thursday November 04, 1999 08:28 PM
DHAKA, Bangladesh (Reuters) -- Bangladesh should wait another year or two for test status, former England captain Mike Gatting said on Thursday after managing the England 'A' team's tour. Gatting said Bangladesh were good enough to play in one-day international cricket but "should wait for at least one or two years for test status." "They should play more and more longer versions of matches [three-day and four-day games] at home and abroad," Gatting told Reuters at the end of the 18-day tour. Gatting acknowledged the move towards the globalization of cricket, saying the International Cricket Council (ICC) could offer financial support to non-test playing countries to play more cricket at home and abroad. He said the ICC should introduce a "second division of test cricket" among Bangladesh, Kenya, Scotland, Canada, Fiji, Bermuda, the United States and 'A' teams from the test playing countries. Bangladesh beat Pakistan and Scotland in the World Cup in England earlier this year.
