SYDNEY, Australia (AP) - Leg spinner Anil Kumble and India's rookie openers staged a comeback against New South Wales at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday to raise the visitors' hopes a week away from the first cricket test.

Kumble captured 4-50 from 16.4 overs to restrict New South Wales to 231 and a first-innings lead of 46, having been hit for 0-131 in the 10-wicket loss to Queensland last week.

It took Sadagopan Ramesh and Daveng Gandhi 23 overs to erase the deficit but their mission was to occupy, not dominate, in their last proper outing at the crease before taking on Australia in Adelaide next Friday.

India finished a three-hour last session at 110-2, with Sadagopan Ramesh (not out 70) and Daveng Gandhi (28) putting on 89 after previous opening stands of 0, 18 and 8.

Young New South Wales speedster Brett Lee again enhanced his test prospects by bowling Gandhi and V.V.S. Laxman second ball, giving him five wickets for the match.

The concern at a loss of form in both camps was obvious, with New South Wales refusing all access to players and India coach Kapil Dev ordering his squad to a net session after stumps.

Kumble, with 259 wickets from 56 tests, is second only to Shane Warne on the all-time list of test leg spinners.
