SYDNEY, Australia (AP) -- India, less than a week away from the first test with Australia, set New South Wales state 286 to win after a determined second-innings effort with the bat Saturday at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

At stumps on the third day of the four-day match, New South Wales was 64-1, with opener Greg Hayne not out 36 and nightwatchman Gavin Robertson on five.

Stand-in captain Saurav Ganguly hit 81, rookie opener Sadagopan Ramesh 74 and allrounder Ajit Agarkar a crafty unbeaten 65 as the tourists responded after their first innings of 185 on Thursday with 331 in the second innings on Saturday.

For New South Wales, fast bowler Brett Lee and leg spinner Stuart MacGill pressed claims for test selection by taking four wickets each.

Lee took 4-77 from 30 tight overs to have 7-123 for the match, while MacGill spun 4-84. Paceman Don Nash chipped in with 2-67.

With Sachin Tendulkar resting, opener Daveng Gandhi batted two hours for 28 on Friday night and Ganguly showed his class.

But the form of Rahul Dravid, considered the mainstay of the lineup, is a concern with a tour aggregate of 70 in more than five hours at the crease.

Dravid could only manage seven in 73 minutes Saturday before hitting a return catch to MacGill with lunch on its way.

The middle session belonged to India as Ganguly and Agarkar combined to add 61, having come together at 199-7.

The first test is in Adelaide starting next Friday.
