EAST LONDON, South Africa (Reuters) -- Batsman Mark Ramprakash is to fly to South Africa on Thursday to join the injury-hit England touring party.

Ramprakash will join the team before the third test starting in Durban on Sunday as a possible replacement for Michael Vaughan. Vaughan injured his right index finger during a warm-up game in East London on Saturday.

"Michael had a few throw downs today and was still experiencing pain," team spokesman Andrew Walpole said on Tuesday.

"So the team decided to bring in Mark as cover."

Vaughan was cleared to play by team physio Dean Conway on Monday after X-rays revealed bruising but no break to his finger. But the team management decided not to take any chances.

"With back to back tests coming up, we need to have an extra batsman," Walpole said.

If Vaughan is unable to play at the weekend, Darren Maddy will be included in the test side. Middlesex batsman Ramprakash will remain on standby.

The fourth Test starts in Cape Town on New Year's Day.
