CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) -- Fast bowler Allan Donald dominated the day as South Africa restricted England to 215 for five wickets on the first day of the fourth test at Newlands Sunday.
Donald finished the day with four wickets for 42 runs on a day in which batsmen got set only to get out. Three of Donald's wickets came from carefully set traps for batsmen who should have known better.
Michael Atherton and Alec Stewart both were tempted into hook shots by fast, short balls and were caught at backward square leg by Gary Kirsten. Atherton scored 71 and Stewart 40.
Kirsten took the catch at third man to get rid of Mark Butcher for 40 as Butcher slashed at a short one outside the off stump, and his wretched run continued.
Donald's fourth was a regulation first slip catch by Daryll Cullinan to get rid of nightwatchman Andrew Caddick for a duck.
Undefeated overnight were Michael Vaughan on 40 and Chris Adams who has yet to score.
Earlier, Donald took the wickets of Atherton and Butcher for two runs in his fiery second spell to hold England to 138 for two at tea. At bat at that point for England were captain Nasser Hussain on 13 and Vaughan on seven.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, England made use of a benign batting pitch to score 89 without loss at lunch. Undefeated were Butcher on 25 and Atherton on a fine 58. Atherton was given a life when Jonty Rhodes dropped a simple catch off the bowling of Allan Donald when Atherton had 15, but, besides that blemish, it has been a cautious innings.
Atherton uncharacteristically almost raced to his 39th test 50, which came up after just 76 balls. At the other end, Butcher has been subdued, as he continues to try and bat his way back into form after his 48 in the previous test in Durban.
In the post-lunch session, Donald and legspinner Paul Adams checked the scoring rate with some very tight bowling. Adams was rewarded with the wicket of Hussain, caught off a pad-bat chance by wicketkeeper Mark Boucher taking his 100th test catch.
South Africa leads the five-test series 1-0.
South Africa has recalled Rhodes at the expense of young fast bowler Mornantau Hayward, and, back in the tourists' team is Vaughan who has recovered from the damage done to his fingers and replaced Darren Maddy.
