CENTURION, South Africa (AP) -- Darren Gough and Andrew Caddick took two wickets each and England reduced South Africa to 155 for six Friday, the first day of their fifth test.

Early heavy incessant rain and later showers allowed only 45 overs and 3 1-2 hours of play.

The start was delayed until after lunch and then it took Gough only six balls to claim Gary Kirsten for a duck, setting off a series of falling wickets at regular intervals that South Africa never recovered fully from.

Daryll Cullinan and debutant Pieter Strydom tried to stage a recover, combining for 47 for the fifth wicket until Strydom fell for 30.

Strydom's stand included five boundaries before Chris Silverwood induced an edge to Alec Stewart.

Cullinan eventually was dismissed by a mistimed pull off the bowling of Allan Mullally. He skied the ball, and Mullally took the catch to get rid of the prize wicket of Cullinan for 48.

Caddick led the England bowlers, claiming the wickets of Herschelle Gibbs and Jacques Kallis for just 29 runs in 12 overs.

Gibbs gloved a Caddick delivery to Adams for three and South Africa was quickly staring at 15 for two.

Kallis tried to stabilized the situation he could, putting up 25 and getting South Africa to 43 for two by tea, which was forced early due to more rain.

He was bowled by Caddick less than two overs after the restart without adding to his total and only Cullinan and Strydom were able to settle South Africa's innings in any fashion.

In a last-minute change to South Africa's team, Mornantau Hayward replaced Allan Donald, who started suffering from a sore foot overnight and decided he was unable to play.

England replaced injured Andrew Flintoff with Darren Maddy, and spinner Phil Tufnell gave way to left-arm seamer Alan Mullally.

South Africa has an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the five-test series.
