CENTURION, South Africa (AP) -- Play was abandoned for the third consecutive day in the fifth test between South Africa and England at SuperSport Park Monday.

With the water table in the area very high after heavy rains, the southern end of the stadium was still sodden underfoot, and bowlers felt it would be dangerous to runup on the surface.

While the ground staff was happy for play to begin on the first rainless day of the test, neither the umpires nor the captains were willing to risk injuries from poor footing.

Play has been scheduled to resume at 10 a.m. (0800 GMT) Tuesday, the final day of the test.

South Africa has scored 155 for the loss of six wickets, with the undefeated batsmen Lance Klusener on 22 and Shaun Pollock on nine. Andrew Caddick was England's best bowler on the first day, taking two wickets for 29 runs.

South Africa has an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the five-test series.
