SHARJAH, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- Just hours after Courtney Walsh broke the world Test wicket-taking record, a delighted former record holder, Kapil Dev, said Tuesday he had sent the West Indian fast bowler four bottles of champagne for him and his teammates to savor.

Walsh crossed the precious milestone against Zimbabwe on Monday in the second Test in front of his home supporters in Jamaica by taking the wicket of Henry Olonga, which brought his tally to a record 435.

Indian legend, Dev, held the record since 1994 when he overcame Richard Hadlee's haul of 431 wickets.

But he is now happy to relinquish the mantle and is only full of admiration for the West Indian's effort.

"I am very happy that he [Walsh] has passe the record. Records are meant to be broken and it's all the more fitting that Courtney [Walsh] has done it in his home country where he learnt his cricket," said Dev of Walsh's feat.

Dev, in Sharjah as the coach of the Indian team, said he was particularly impressed with how the 6-foot-6 (1.95-meter) Walsh has continued to stay fit and insists that he is not at all sorry to lose the record.

"The fitness he has shown in playing cricket for 20 years is a credit to Courtney [Walsh]. He's done it and we should all be proud of that," said Dev.

"I have broken somebody's record, he has broken mine and somebody will do his. You set a target for other people to follow," said Dev.
