Warned Australia, S. Africa tie indoors in one-day international
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- Shane Warne's attempt for two runs from the final ball Friday went for one, allowing Australia to tie South Africa in the second limited-overs match of a three-game series at the indoor Colonial Stadium. Warne's single left the home side with 226-9 off 50 overs in response to South Africa's 226-9, also from 50 overs. Australia appeared headed for an easy win, but the tourists gradually reeled in the batsmen with tight bowling and fielding. Andrew Hall, who scored 37, came on late in the Australian innings and was an unlikely hero with his medium pacers, taking 2-8 from three overs. Australia won the first match of the series on Wednesday night by 94 runs and the series will now be decided on Sunday. Earlier, a fifth-wicket stand between Jonty Rhodes and Mark Boucher helped boost South Africa's total. Their partnership of 87 off 86 balls came at a price, with Rhodes suffering a recurrence of his groin strain in the over before his dismissal for 54 off 51 balls. Rhodes needed opener Hall as a runner after he pulled up awkwardly at the end of a run in the 39th over. Boucher inflicted pain on Australia in his innings of 51 from 63 deliveries -- he skied a ball off comeback paceman Jason Gillespie to Michael Bevan at deep square leg in the 30th over when he was on eight and the score 113-4. Bevan dropped the straight-forward chance and also dislocated the top knuckle in his right index finger, with 12th man Shane Lee taking his place on the field for the rest of the innings. Rhodes and Boucher came together with the score on 95-4 in the 25th over and steadily took the advantage away from Australia with a well-paced partnership. Opening bowler Glenn McGrath, who yielded only 0-28 from 10 overs in Wednesday night's 94-run win, came in for some punishment from the pair and took 1-47 from 10 overs. Rhodes and Boucher scored a boundary apiece off him in 28th over, while Rhodes also straight-hit him for six two balls before his dismissal in the 40th over, caught in the deep by Lee off McGrath.
