Battling host Kenya beaten by eight wickets

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) -- India defeated Kenya by eight wickets with more than seven of its 50 overs to spare in the opening match of the International Cricket Council Knockout Trophy limited overs tournament at the Nairobi Gymkhana ground.

Put in to bat by Indian skipper Saurav Ganguly, the host team made 208 for nine from its 50 overs with opener Ravindu Shah top scoring with 60 runs.

India then made 209 for the loss of two wickets in 42.3 overs, with Rahul Dravid not out on 68 and Vinod Kambli not out 39.

Openers, Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar made 66 and 25 respectively.

Kenya was struggling on 64 for three, before captain Maurice Odumbe (51) and opener Ravindu Shah (60) produced a fourth-wicket partnership of 81 runs to produce a respectable score.

Shah's innings, which came off 93 balls, included six boundaries and a six.

Thomas Odoyo produced a quick 35 off 34 balls to help the Kenyan score past the 200 mark.

The pick of the Indian bowlers were Zaheer Khan, who took three for 48 from his 10 overs, and Venkatesh Prasad, Anil Kumble and Zaheer Khan who each claimed two wickets. Kumble was named man of the match for his two wickets for 22 runs off 10 overs.

The West Indies takes on Sri Lanka in the second match of the tournament on Wednesday, while Bangladesh plays England on Thursday.

All the matches are being played at the Nairobi Gymkhana.

The final will be on October 15.

The ICC Knockout was officially launched Tuesday by Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi.
